Hermosa Creek is a very "user friendly" natural
stream. It is big enough to maintain a good fish population
but most of the time is not so big as to be a threat to
young kids as they learn to fish. Like most mountain streams,
it does have a runoff period as the snow melts. However,
it is an "early" runoff, mostly in March through
May as the drainage area is all below timberline. During
runoff, the fly fishermen usually head for the San Juan
below Navajo Dam. By the warmest months (June - October),
the water is typically very friendly. The Seller has had
many "tubing" races with his kids down the river.
*
There is talk of a "wild-and-scenic-river" designation
for Hermosa Creek.
PROPERTY
FEATURES:
*
The property features a private narrow entry valley which
opens up to approximately 6 football fields of flat to
gently sloping land, part of which is an old apple orchard.
*
There is a small, older fishing cabin with electricity
in the middle of the property.
*
The property road has been improved with a new, heavy
duty bridge and rock retaining wall.
*
The property has 100% of the mineral rights.
*
No conservation easements.
FOREST
SERVICE:
*
The ranch is almost surrounded (3.5 sides) by top quality
National Forest, a giant playground!
*
50,000 acres wrapping around the west side of the Hermosa
Creek Ranch and between the west side of Hermosa Creek
and west up to the Colorado Trail (Highline Trail) is
pending designation to protect it as the West Hermosa
Wilderness Area.
*
50,000 acres of the east side of Hermosa Creek is proposed
as a "special management" area allowing motor
cross and mountain biking but preventing logging and mining.
*
Information on the proposed wilderness area can be found
at http://www.hermosacreek.org
*
The forest service on the west side of the ranch is very
hard to get to by the public and rarely sees a human.
RECREATION:
*
"The Hermosa Creek basin has two outstandingly remarkable
values: recreation, and fish and wildlife. Virtually all
outdoor recreation activities are allowed including mountain
biking, hunting, fishing, camping, off-roading, horses,
hiking, climbing, kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing and recreational
vehicles (upper region)." To view complete article,
